Stolen RV recovered; pets still missing
Police find vehicle but parrots gone
California family worry about birds
All day yesterday, a family from California sat by the phone in their Toronto hotel room, wondering who would want to steal a rented motorhome with their beloved pets inside.
The motorhome was insured, but not their belongings. Their biggest concern was that their pets — two parrots, two cats and a two-month-old hamster named Toronto in honour of their visit — could run out of food, or even be killed.
Danny Black, 49, his wife Debbie, 48, and their three kids — John, 17, Derek, 15, and Sarah, 12 — had driven from California in the motorhome that was stolen from the Yorkdale parking lot Tuesday afternoon.
The family got some good news last night when an off-duty police officer spotted the motorhome heading east on Highway 401, near Whitby, just after 8 p.m. Seven cruisers were sent and boxed in the vehicle nearly one and a half kilometres later near Thickson Rd. One man is in custody, police said.
Inside, police found the family's two cats and a hamster, but no sign of the two birds.
"I am just hoping (the parrots) were put in a house or something," said John. "The cages aren't even here. They're gone completely. Stuff is just thrown everywhere, drawers are ripped off, everything is everywhere. I don't get it why you'd leave the cats and get rid of the birds."
Kiki, a three-year-old orange and yellow sun conure, and Jess, a two-year-old white Moluccan cockatoo with orange underfeathers, are still missing.
Debbie's biggest worry is for Jess. She said he is very loud and hopes "whoever took him didn't just get fed up hearing him and throw him out the window.''
"I researched for two years before I paid $1,000 for him," she said. "I hand-fed him from the time he was two weeks old through a syringe. I know it sounds crazy, but I wanted to grow old with him."
Moluccan cockatoos can live as long as 80 years, according to the Oakland zoo.
There is one reason for optimism. Jess, whose tailfeathers are missing, is one tough bird. "He's had two surgeries.... He's a survivor," Debbie said.
Danny was born in Toronto and Debbie is from New York.
The family is moved by the outpouring of support and urge anyone with information on the parrots to contact police.
